Indy the perfect fit

Jenna’s household is definitely a busy one. She and her husband Ryan are always on the go with their sons Dylen and Brody and their dog Hardy.

But they decided there was room in their lives for one more addition. Jenna knew they didn’t have the space for another dog, and thought rabbits and guinea pigs were too small for their young kids to care for. So a dog was too big, a rabbit was too small, but a cat… was juuuuuust right!

“When we decided we were ready to get a cat, we immediately knew we wanted to adopt one from the RSPCA. My family has always had rescue animals, and I knew there were so many cats out there needing a home.”

Jenna’s boys, then 1 and 3 years old, came along to Burwood East to help choose the newest member of their family.

“It was important for us to choose a cat who was confident enough to live with noisy kids, as the boys aren’t shy about their love for animals!”

Jenna had always been told, ‘you don’t choose the cat, the cat chooses you.’ So when they went to meet the cats available for adoption they sat back and waited for the right cat to approach them. As soon as they entered a room, a beautiful little champagne cat marched straight up to them, and sat in the boys laps. They were immediately smitten and knew she was the one for them.

“I’ve had dogs my whole life but never had a cat, so it was great to have such knowledgeable staff to teach us about how to care for her. They taught us about slowly introducing her to our dog, changing her litter, what type of food to feed her and when she needs to go to the vet.”

Keeping watch over the kids

They named her Indy, and took her home that same day to begin settling her into their house. After a few days she was right at home, finding toilet rolls to play with and climbing up the blinds when she thought no one was watching! She quickly formed bonds with every member of the family.

“Brody and Indy share an absolutely incredible friendship. She spends every night snuggled on the foot of his bed, they’re always looking out for each other. When Brody had gastro, Indy didn’t leave his side for four days!”

Tucked up on the end of the bed
Indy has taught the boys so many different things already. Now five years old, Brody is learning responsibility by being in charge of making sure Indy has enough food and water, and knowing when her dinner time is. Jenna and Ryan’s youngest son Dylen learned quickly about picking up and carrying Indy the right way, and making sure he is gentle when patting her.

“It’s so great to see Dylen being compassionate and caring towards animals, which to us are such important lessons. If we ever go away Dylen tells us how much he misses Indy.”

A big lover of food, Indy won’t hesitate to let you know if her dinner is five minutes late. Once when she was presented with a different type of cat food, Indy showed her disapproval by pushing the bowl off the bench, scattering the food, and giving everyone that passed a gentle tap to remind them that she was displeased! Indy has light features so she enjoys her indoor lifestyle. She occasionally sits at the window to watch the outside world go by, but hasn’t shown any interest in venturing out!

Indy and Hardy always keep each other company
For Jenna and her family, one of the best things about bringing Indy into their lives is her relationship with their dog Hardy. They truly are best friends, never leaving each other’s sides. Indy and Hardy can often be found snuggled up together in bed or on the couch and pine for each other if ever separated.

“During the day when nobody else is home, they are such great company for each other. Often I’ll come home and watch them both peering out at me from the window, excited to greet me when I come through the door.”

“We’re so glad we decided to adopt and can’t imagine our lives without her. We can’t believe such a small little cat is already such a big part of our home and our family.”
