Work Experience

The aim of our program is to give tertiary and secondary students an understanding of the role of animal welfare and animal care in the community.

We aim to develop your participation and communication skills through involvement in a variety of practical, relevant and challenging activities.

 

 

Work Experience is available at Burwood or Mornington Peninsula

 

 

 

 

 

 

Welcome to Work Experience at the RSPCA Burwood!!

Days and Hours for Work Experience:

 Our Work Experience program is run from our head office at Burwood.
        At 3 Burwood Highway (cnr Middleborough Road),
        Burwood East,  Victoria 3151.

        For enquires in regional areas, please contact the shelters directly.

 Our program runs for 5 days from Monday to Friday.

 The hours are 8am – 3pm in the Shelter and Clinic.

 On Monday, your first day with us, you will meet with Jacinta Giuliano, our Volunteer Resource
        Coordinator in our Administration Building. This is so you can meet the other work experience students
        for that week, to receive a welcome to the RSPCA, to have a brief induction, to receive a tour of the
        RSPCA and to be introduced to our area of work and supervisor.

 On Friday, your last day with us, you will meet again with Jacinta Giuliano at 2:30pm to reflect on your
        week with us, discuss possible career advice in an animal
        related field, possibly register to become an ongoing volunteer, fill in your  feedback forms and receive
        a memento of your week with us.

WHERE CAN I WORK?

There are 2 areas in our organisation that you can choose from;
 

SHELTER
 

The animal welfare shelter is responsible for the daily operations of the kennels, cattery, barn and adoptions. It is a daily requirement that the animals in the shelter are clean, fed and as comfortable as can be expected. Tasks include:

  KENNELS
  Cleaning pens in Puppies, Dog
       Adoptions
  Walking dogs from Adoption
  Kongs – cleaning and re-stuffing for
      adoption and seized dogs
  Disinfecting empty pens in Quarantine
  Preparing food for lunch feeds
  Brushing Adoption dogs
  General pooper-scoop around the
       kennel areas and walking track
  Take out rubbish and re-line bins
  Observe Adoption Officers

BARN
 Clean fish tank, chook pen, goose pen, cat enclosure, rabbit pen, guinea pigs pen and rat cage,
  Replace water for all animals
  Provide feed for animals
   Collect grass for rabbits and guinea
       pigs breakfast and feed
  Sweep barn floor
  Empty garbage
  Do dishes
  Wipe down benches and shelves in
       prep room
  Collect hay/straw/feed from hayshed
       that’s required during the day
   Socialise and groom the small
       animals

 

  CATTERY
 
 Socialising Adoption cats
  Brushing Adoption cats
  Cleaning Adoption areas (cats,
       kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs)
  Disinfecting empty sheds in Cat
       Adoption
  Feeding cats in Adoption as instructed
       by staff
  Take out rubbish and re-line bins
  Checking and refilling litter trays
  Washing and disinfecting litter trays
       and food bowls
  Observe Adoption Officers

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

NOTE: Work Experience Students may handle only post-quarantine, temperament assessed animals.

CLINIC


The Veterinary clinic is responsible for all surgical procedures performed on animals, desexing animals, rectifying health problems in shelter animals and it is a private clinic for the community to bring in their own pets. Tasks include:

 Assist wards nurses with:
 
Cleaning and feeding patients
  Exercise hospitalised animals under
       supervision
  Cleaning food bowls and litter trays
  Sweeping and mopping ward floors
  Removing rubbish to dumpster
  Laundry
  Make food samples
  Re-stock brochures


 
Check hospital/surgery patients
  Ensure cage is clean and dry
  Groom hospitalised patients under
       supervision
  Assist roving nurses
  Clean surgical instruments
  Pack surgical hand towels
  Clean and check cuffs on
       endotracheal tubes

HOW DO I APPLY?

 A brief telephone interview will be conducted if you are successful in the written
       application phase

 You will be advised via email if your application is unsuccessful

Once you have been approved and have received your confirmation email,  you will then need to speak to your Work Experience Coordinator at your school to organise your Work Experience Arrangement Form.

        Robinsons Road Pearcedale 3912. For enquires in regional areas, please contact the shelters
        directly.

 Our program runs for 5 days from Monday to Friday.

 The hours are 8.00am – 12.00pm in the Shelter
 The hours are 8.30am – 12:30pm in the Clinic

 On Monday, your first day with us, you will meet with our Volunteer Resources Coordinator Martine
        Guillemain in our shelter office. This is so you can meet the other work experience students we have in
        that week, to receive a welcome to the RSPCA and to have a brief induction.

 During the Work Experience program the Volunteer Resources Coordinator will discuss possible
        career advice in an animal related field and the opportunity of registering to become an ongoing
        volunteer. We will collect feedback forms and the student will receive a memento of the week with us.

 Please note our work experience program is fully booked over the dates September and October 2007
