There are 540 million farm animals in Australia. The RSPCA’s objective
is to promote and enhance the welfare of animals. In recent years,
intensive farming methods have been developed that promote high
production levels for a lower cost and therefore, greater profits.
Sadly, these profits often come at the cost of the animals’ welfare.
An RSPCA Agricultural Studies presentation will include:
1. Current RSPCA campaigns such as:
- Live animal export
- Sheep Shedding
- Intensive Farming (battery hens, sows in stalls)2. RSPCA
cruelty case studies
Cruelty, neglect and ignorance can all lead to animals suffering.
Examples of animal welfare issues investigated by RSPCA Inspectors are
detailed,
including outcomes and how the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act is
enforced.
3. Zoonosis
Diseases that can be caught from animals, including brucellosis,
leptospirosis, Avian ‘flu, and how these can be managed.
4. Careers
TAFE and university options for working with animals in the
agricultural sector. A range of animal based careers such as RSPCA
Inspector, Agricultural Health Officer, farrier and more.
