Rabbits as Pets

RSPCA Pet Adoption | Rabbits as Pets

Are you looking for a pet with personality?

If so, have you considered a rabbit?

Rabbits are amazing animals that whilst full of character, can make a great pet for those who want something quiet and less demanding!  They are meticulously clean like cats, are easily toilet trained and are becoming extremely popular choices as pets as they are able to be kept indoors provided they have access to sun filled areas of light, and of course, are allowed to play freely for a couple of hours a day.

Rabbits are extremely sociable animals that love to be petted and enjoy the company of humans and other rabbits.  While they do love company, they can be left alone during the day so fit in well with people who work or are away from the house.

Rabbits are also a great way of introducing young children to animals. Like all other animals, it is important to make sure young children are supervised when playing with rabbits however, as they can become scared easily.  There shouldn’t be any problems if children are taught how to handle rabbits properly.  Some rabbits can be flighty, and as a general rule, prefer to be petted than cuddled which younger children may not understand.

It is important to remember, that rabbits adopted through a pet shop or at a market are not de-sexed and can reproduce up to 12 times per year.  While a rabbit adopted from an RSPCA Adoption Centre is desexed, if you are purchasing a rabbit from elsewhere it will be important that you take your rabbit to a vet straight away to have the operation.  This will also give your rabbit a much friendlier temperament.

Adopt a rabbit at an RSPCA adoption centre today.  We have a variety of breeds available and have a rabbit to suit your lifestyle! View our Adoption Centres.
