Skittles was left for dead, but after three terrifying days alone he was rescued by an RSPCA Inspector.

When Skittles was found, Inspector Collier thought he was dead - he was suffering from horrendous injuries. What’s worse is that these injuries were inflicted by the very man Skittles had come to trust – his owner.

Wrapped in a bloodied sheet, and with his legs bound with cable ties that dug into his flesh, Skittles lay for three days in bushland on the side of a road. It wasn’t until Skittles was examined at the RSPCA’s Clinic that the full extent of his injuries became clear. Skittles had been shot in the head, leaving him deaf and partially blind.

Skittles’ injuries were truly heartbreaking. He was unable to stand, he was depressed and he was severely emaciated; RSPCA vets didn’t know if he would be able to recover. But after intensive rehabilitation and veterinary care, including the removal of his eye, Skittles showed us that he was a true survivor.

While the RSPCA’s veterinary team worked hard to help Skittles overcome his injuries, the Inspectorate were determined to bring the man responsible for this act of cruelty to justice. They gathered evidence, interviewed witnesses, and started to build their case.

In court, Skittles’ previous owner pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty and was fined $7,500 and banned from owning any animal for ten years.

With Skittles’ previous owner now held accountable for his actions, the real happy ending came when Skittles found his new home – with a Senior RSPCA Inspector who had an instant connection with this special and courageous boy.

Today, Skittles is a confident and happy dog, who relishes the love and affection of his new family, who absolutely adore him.

With Skittles’ care and rehabilitation estimated at more than $20,000, the RSPCA relies almost solely on the generosity of the community to be able to provide this vital and lifesaving care to animals in need.
