Why is dental health so important?

Dental disease is one of the most common health problems our pets face. Oral disease in pets starts with a build up of bacteria that can cause plaque. As a bacterium grows in the plaque, the plaque turns to tartar.

Common signs of periodontal disease can include bad breath, painful mouth, difficulty eating or reduced appetite, teeth loss, pawing and rubbing of the mouth, bleeding gums, yellow or brown tartar build up on teeth and increased drooling or dribbling.

If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss and can cause damage to other organs, such as the heart, liver and kidneys, or lead to other serious health problems.

Treat their teeth

Using dental treats is a great way to clean your pets teeth while giving them something fun and enjoyable to do. The right treat for your pet can reduce tartar, clean their teeth and freshen their breath by scraping against the tooth’s surface as they chew.

Greenies are a great dental treat that come in a range of sizes and flavours for dogs and cats. They are easy to digest and help prevent plaque and tartar build up due to the texture of the treat.

Talk to our friendly staff about the right treat for your pet, depending on their size, chewing habits and daily diet.

Play away the plaque

Similarly to dental treats, certain toys can do a great job of keeping your dogs teeth clean, while still being fun!

Toys that encourage chewing are a great idea, as well as rope and flossy chew toys which are designed to scrape against the dogs teeth while chewing.

Another option is to put dental treats inside an enrichment toy, which will keep your pet mentally stimulated as well as keeping on top of oral hygiene! The great part is toys come in all shapes and sizes, so they suit most breeds.

Brush their teeth ch-ch-ch-ch

Brushing your pets teeth is a targeted and effective way to maintain oral health, and there are lots of different tools for the job!

Finger toothbrush: This is a great starting tool! If your dog is not used to having their teeth brushed, you can gradually introduce brushing to them using a finger toothbrush.

Toothpastes: We have a range of toothpastes and gels designed to help remove and prevent plaque and tartar build up. Most of these are flavoured as well to act as a treat and to encourage excitement in brushing teeth. The gel is super easy to use, you can just pop a couple of drops in each side of your dogs or cats mouth, and they will naturally lick and spread the gel around using their own saliva.

Toothbrush: Toothbrushes are an ideal tool for helping keep your dogs teeth clean. Unlike human toothbrushes, pet toothbrushes have a unique triple sided design to help surround your dogs teeth. Some come in kits with the toothpaste and gels to make it easy to get started!

Visit the dentist (aka your vet!)

Having regular visits to the vet is key for your pets well being and ensuring their teeth and gums remain healthy. Your vet can give you tailored advice for ensuring good oral hygiene. As pets get older, your vet may also suggest a scale and polish or even to remove certain teeth, as an infected mouth can lead to serious health problems.

To help you maintain your pet's dental health we're offering free dental health checks for your dog or cat with one of our qualified veterinary nurses, at our Burwood East and Peninsula clinics during August. Your dental health check will include;

  • An assessment of your pet's current dental health
  • A detailed plan for ongoing preventive measures you can take to look after your pet's dental health
  • Referral and advice for any treatment needed for existing issues
  • Educational advice and materials to support your pet's dental health at home

To book your free dental health check call 9224 2222 for Burwood East and 5978 9000 for Peninsula or make an appointment in person.
