Debarking Debarking is the surgical operation that involves removing tissue from a dog’s vocal chords. This results in a dog’s voice box being quieter, however does not stop barking behaviour. RSPCA Victoria does not support the debarking of dogs to prevent excessive barking. It is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to perform, or allow this prohibited procedure to be performed in Victoria. The RSPCA believes it is the responsibility of the owner to control and manage their dog’s behaviour. Debarking surgery subjects dogs to unnecessary surgery and does not allow them to display their full range of natural behaviours. As with many problem behaviours exhibited by dogs, with training, obedience classes and mental and physical stimulation, barking problems can be overcome easily. There are many organisations, including the RSPCA that run these training sessions for nominal fees.
If you believe you know of a dog that has been debarked, please contact the
RSPCA Victoria Inspectorate on 03 9224 2222. You can also call this
number for more information on obedience classes offered by the RSPCA, or to
speak to an expert on how you can decrease excessive barking behaviours in
your dog. > Back to top
