About Peninsula
RSPCA Peninsula joined the RSPCA in 1982 after operating as an
independent shelter for 20 years. The original aims of the shelter
very much aligned with the aims of RSPCA and led to the union of the shelter
with RSPCA. Since 1982 the shelter has seen an increase in the
need for their services and has invested in infrastructure to ensure the
welfare of animals in the area.
In 1984 the
“Doris Burns Campbell” veterinary clinic was open to provide veterinary
services to animals within the shelter. In 1989 the veterinary clinic opened
to the community to service privately owned pets, with all proceeds directed
to the shelter.
In 1987 the shelter office was built to ensure the ever increasing customer
numbers could be serviced.
1993 saw the first prevention of cruelty to animals’ inspector based at the
Peninsula shelter.
In 1998, with ever increasing numbers of dog in need of shelter and
re-homing, the dog adoptions area was completed.
In January 1999 the RSPCA Peninsula’s new veterinary clinic was officially
opened by Dr. Hugh Wirth AM KSJ.
May 2004 saw the completion of the new cat quarantine building. The new
building was a vast improvement on the previous three buildings that cat
quarantine occupied. With the new building better welfare outcomes were
achieve with a decrees in the spread of flu due to the inclusion of a cat
isolation room, used to isolate sick cats from the health population of cats
in quarantine.

In 2006 school holiday programs began at Peninsula, helping to teach the
animal welfare message to our younger generation, our future leaders.
